Event on November 16th with a memorial service and lecture at the Justus Liebig House
As the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt announces, a commemoration of those who died at the European external borders will take place on Sunday, November 16, 2025 , the National Day of Mourning . It will begin at 5 p.m. in Ludwig-Metzger-Platz in front of the Justus Liebig House. This will be followed by in the Justus Liebig House 6 p.m.
Remembering the victims of the flight across the Mediterranean
Under the motto "…those in the dark are invisible," the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt, together with a group of church and civil society organizations, commemorates the people who lost their lives fleeing to Europe. More than 500 people drowned in the Mediterranean in the first half of 2025 alone – in search of safety and a better life.
The memorial service begins at 5 p.m. in Ludwig-Metzger-Platz with speeches and musical accompaniment . The aim is to preserve the memory of the dead and to draw attention to the ongoing suffering at Europe's external borders.
Lecture: “(Not) a gateway to Europe?”
Starting at 6 p.m. in the Justus Liebig House, psychologist Anna Meinhardt and sociologist Kerstin Meinhardt give a lecture They traveled to the islands of Sicily and Lampedusa , where they met people who support refugees after their arrival.
The evening's focus is the artwork "Gateway to Europe" on Lampedusa, which serves as a reminder of the deadly risks faced by many people attempting to flee their home countries. The speakers will discuss how cities like Palermo , as " solidarity cities, " actively promote solidarity and integration – despite growing challenges and social tensions.

The organizers of the event include Amnesty International (Darmstadt district) , the Darmstadt Alliance Against the Right , the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt , the Darmstadt Asylum Coordination Group , the Darmstadt-Mitte Pastoral Area of the Catholic Church of Darmstadt , pax christi Regional Group Hesse South and the Seebrücke Darmstadt .
