Together they planned, shopped, cooked and ate
In the kitchen of the Leeheim youth center, six girls between the ages of nine and twelve sit around a table, busily chopping potatoes and chicken. "We're making the main course. We're having chicken nuggets with potato wedges and herbed quark," reveals Matilda (ten years old).
To conclude "WinterFun," the holiday program offered by the city's youth office and the Auszeit association, youth worker Julia Spitzer invited participants to a communal cooking session. Since the Erfelden youth center is currently closed due to several water leaks, she had to relocate the program to the Leeheim youth center at short notice. But before the cooking could begin, there was planning and shopping to be done. "We first discussed together what we wanted to cook, then made a shopping list and went shopping," Spitzer explained.
In several rooms of the youth center, work is now underway on a multi-course meal. While the main course is being prepared in the kitchen, Clara, Fiona, Leonie, and Doreen are working on the appetizers a few steps below. While Leonie and Doreen make a cucumber salad, Clara and Fiona are topping dough for classic pizza rolls as well as a tarte flambée variation.
In the next room, Milena, Hira, and Noah are taking a short break. They have to wait until the melted chocolate has cooled down enough to be safely mixed with the whipped cream. After all, the chocolate mousse shouldn't be runny, but nice and firm when served for dessert.
During the first two weeks of January, the "WinterFun" program offered a variety of activities, which could also be booked individually. Youth worker Spitzer reports that all activities were very well received. The program kicked off with a trip to Darmstadt for ice skating. Another day included an excursion to Frankfurt, with visits to the Städel Museum and the city center. Additionally, young people aged twelve and up went laser tagging in Darmstadt, and now, on the final day of the holiday program, participants will be cooking. But of course, it won't just be cooking. As a grand finale, all the delicious dishes prepared together will be enjoyed with great pleasure.
