Second METACOM system improves participation of children with and without disabilities
Reinheim. communication board has been installed at the "In den Orscheläckern" playground . The town of Reinheim is thus continuing its inclusive approach and strengthening the participation of children with diverse linguistic and cognitive abilities. A first board of this kind was installed at the "Am Spielfeld" playground almost two years ago.
The new board is based on the METACOM symbol system and contains 66 easily understandable picture symbols. It facilitates communication – for example, for children with disabilities or people with limited German language skills – and thus enables greater participation in social interaction on the playground.
The symbol system provides visual support in everyday situations and promotes inclusive encounters in public spaces. The sign was developed in close collaboration with the inclusion officer of the city of Reinheim .
This measure is part of a long-term concept: More playgrounds in Reinheim are to be equipped with similar communication boards in the coming years. The aim is to enable all children to participate equally in play – regardless of language or disability.
