Energy-efficient renovation and expansion strengthen social cohesion in the neighborhood
On Friday (23rd), Mayor Hanno Benz , Deputy Mayor Barbara Akdeniz , City Councillor Michael Kolmer and City Treasurer André Schellenberg ceremoniously reopened the community center in the Pallaswiesen-Morneweg district (PaMo) after comprehensive energy-efficient renovation and structural expansion.
“This fulfills a central goal of the urban development program ‘Social Cohesion – PaMo’: the creation of a modern, barrier-free place for the people in the neighborhood, offering space for meeting, advice, participation and education,” explained Mayor Hanno Benz.
The building, originally constructed in 1989, underwent energy-efficient renovations by the real estate management department of the City of Darmstadt and was expanded with a new building on the west side. This resulted in additional group and office spaces, new barrier-free access, an elevator, and an open entrance area facing Pallaswiesenstrasse.
Mayor Akdeniz, who is also the head of the department for social affairs, youth and prevention, emphasized: "The new community center is a strong sign of participation and cohesion. A place has been created here where people of all generations can find support, contribute their ideas and shape community life in the neighborhood together."
High energy standards and climate protection
The project meets high energy efficiency standards. The existing building was brought up to the Efficiency House Standard 55, and the new building to the Efficiency House Standard 40. A photovoltaic system generates electricity for on-site use, and rainwater is infiltrated into the ground via a swale in the forecourt, thus relieving the burden on the sewer system.
“The structural renovation of the community center combines climate protection, social infrastructure, and quality of life,” said City Councillor Kolmer. “With the energy-efficient renovation and the planned greening of the surrounding area, we are making an important contribution to a sustainable and climate-resilient neighborhood.”
Operations are guaranteed during the construction period
During the construction phase, which began in spring 2023, community work was relocated to temporary quarters in containers on Pallaswiesenstrasse. "This allowed counseling, family support, neighborhood meetings, and recreational activities to continue without interruption," explained City Treasurer Schellenberg. The renovated existing building has retained its character, and the extension is a functional and aesthetic addition.
Caritas Association of Darmstadt is the organization responsible for community work at the community center . The additional rooms will allow for more services to be offered in the future, including counseling, language courses, family programs, and cultural events.
The design of the outdoor area, developed in collaboration with residents, is scheduled for implementation in 2026. The furnishing of the community center and the creation of the children's playroom were supported by donations from the ENTEGA Foundation and Software AG .
