Memories and documents relating to the Darmstadt firebombing are sought
The destruction of Darmstadt in the firebombing of September 11, 1944, was one of the most defining catastrophes in the city's history. The municipal hospital was also severely damaged that night, and many sick and injured people had to be transferred to emergency shelters or alternative hospitals. Reconstruction dominated the postwar years – but many stories from this time remain untold.
Who can share memories?
Local historian Helmut Hahn is conducting a research project on the events of the firebombing and the subsequent reconstruction of the hospital. He is seeking individuals or their descendants who experienced this period firsthand. He is particularly interested in accounts from people who were in the hospital or lived in the immediate vicinity during the 1944 air raid. Does your family have any stories, letters, or photographs from this time? If so, please get in touch!
Born in the women's clinic between 1947 and 1955?
Another aspect of the research is the history of the relocated women's clinic , which was housed in the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus on Dieburger Straße . The researchers are looking for people who were born there between 1947 and 1955 and can share their memories or stories from that time.
Those interested can share their experiences in interviews or provide documents such as photos and letters.
