Darmstadt is focusing on the safe and barrier-free redesign of intersections
As part of the federally funded SQUADA model project – Safe Crossing for All in Darmstadt – an agreement has been reached on the further development of the so-called Dutch-style protected intersection . Following intensive discussions, a revised plan has now been presented that equally meets the needs of cyclists, pedestrians, and visually impaired road users.
Since 2017, the project has aimed to improve safety at Darmstadt intersections – especially for cyclists. The solution now found marks a turning point: Cyclists will in future be guided along protected cycle lanes on the roadway . Cyclists turning right will align themselves with the traffic lights for motor vehicles to avoid conflicts with crossing pedestrians. An indirect and physically separated solution is planned for left turns.
Pedestrians also benefit: barrier-free sidewalks, straight crossings , and the elimination of the previous dedicated right-turn lane in favor of pedestrians are key elements of the new plan. This will create greater safety, particularly in the area in front of the Art Nouveau swimming pool .
A key component of the new approach was the roundtable discussion on March 26, 2025 , which included representatives from FUSS eV, CBF, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, and the cycling referendum initiative Paul Georg Wandrey, the agreement reached is a "success for peace in mobility" and provides a blueprint for further intersection redesigns in Darmstadt .
"The science city of Darmstadt is thus sending a clear signal for a safe, barrier-free and conflict-free transformation of the urban transport infrastructure," said Wandrey.
The preliminary design will now be developed by a planning office based on the agreed proposals.
