Recording vehicles operating within the city limits – data protection in accordance with the GDPR is guaranteed
As the city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, has announced, vehicles from the company Cyclomedia October 20th until approximately November 10th, 2025. Equipped with cameras and laser scanners, these vehicles digitally capture the surroundings to create high-resolution, georeferenced, and three-dimensional 360-degree panoramic images .
Since the recordings may also capture personal data such as faces or vehicle license plates, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) . According to the city and Cyclomedia, the protection of this data is guaranteed.
Deployment for planning and administration
The generated panoramic images provide the city administration with a realistic view of the urban area and serve for visualization, measurement, and planning . They can be used across departmental boundaries – for example, for topics such as accessibility , road and cycle path planning , or the deployment planning of security and emergency services .
Digital representation allows work processes to be made more efficient, time-saving, and cost-effective. The image data will be used exclusively for internal administrative purposes ; publication on the internet is not planned.
Data protection and legal basis
Cyclomedia processes the collected data on the basis of Article 6 Paragraph 1 lit. f GDPR , as there is a legitimate interest in creating and processing the street recordings. The recordings are made available exclusively to public and private organizations under strict conditions.
The company has appointed a data protection officer who monitors compliance with the GDPR. Further information on data protection and your rights under Article 14 of the GDPR can be found on the Cyclomedia website:
