Recording vehicles on the move in the city area – data protection guaranteed according to GDPR
According to the Science City of Darmstadt, vehicles from the company Cyclomedia October 20th to November 10th, 2025. Equipped with cameras and laser scanners, the vehicles digitally record the surroundings to create high-resolution, georeferenced, and three-dimensional 360-degree panoramic images .
Since personal data such as faces or license plate numbers may be captured during the recordings, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) . According to the city and Cyclomedia, the protection of this data is guaranteed.
Use for planning and administration
The resulting panoramic images provide the city administration with a realistic view of the urban area and are used for visualization, measurement, and planning . They can be used across administrative boundaries—for example, for issues such as accessibility , road and cycle path planning , or the deployment of security and emergency personnel .
Digital representation makes work processes more efficient, time-saving, and cost-effective. The image data is used exclusively for internal administrative purposes ; publication on the Internet is not intended.
Data protection and legal basis
Cyclomedia processes the collected data based on Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR , as it has a legitimate interest in creating and processing the street images. The images are made available exclusively to public and private organizations under strict conditions.
