Three-dimensional representation of the entire city area is now available online.
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, has announced that a new, fully textured, three-dimensional city model, "Darmstadt 3D," is now available online. It is based on aerial photographs from March 2025 and laser scan data from 2019, which were processed by the city's surveying office to create a current and true-to-scale model.
High level of detail for the entire city area
The digital model depicts buildings including roof shapes, streets, trees, terrain features, and high-resolution aerial photographs. Additionally, oblique aerial images from all directions provide a bird's-eye view. Barrier-free access is available via standard web browsers at www.darmstadt.de
.
Numerous functions in the browser application
The application allows users to measure distances and areas, simulate shadows, and analyze visibility. It also enables users to share custom views and export screenshots as PDFs. An integrated address search facilitates navigation within the digital city model.
Support for urban planning and analysis
"Darmstadt 3D" serves as a basis for urban planning, construction projects, and various urban analyses – for example, regarding urban development, climate risks, or infrastructure. The model provides specialist planners, administrators, and the public with precise insights into spatial relationships. Furthermore, it promotes transparency and citizen participation by clearly illustrating complex processes.
A first practical example is the heavy rainfall hazard map of the Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation, which is already available online.
A step towards the Urban Digital Twin
Looking ahead, “Darmstadt 3D” forms the foundation for an Urban Digital Twin. This will eventually combine data from areas such as climate events, mobility, and energy demand, thus supporting decision-making in administration and politics.
City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey emphasizes: “This model demonstrates the potential that digital technologies offer for innovative urban development. It enables us to plan more precisely, better address future hazards, and make our city even more livable for its people.”
