Support boycott, pyrotechnics and game interruption – commentary on DA.news
During the second division match between SV Darmstadt 98 and SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday evening, an unusual silence initially reigned in the Merck Stadium. Both sets of fans had announced they would refrain from any vocal support for the first ten minutes. The action proceeded as planned: only from the twelfth minute onwards did loud support from both sets of fans begin.
Shortly afterward, however, an event occurred with a significant impact on the course of the game. Just minutes before Fraser Hornby's goal to make it 1-0, the active Darmstadt fan scene in the south stand ignited a large amount of pyrotechnics. Immediately after the goal celebration, thick smoke filled the stadium, making it difficult to see the pitch at times. The match had to be interrupted for several minutes.

Afterwards, Darmstadt seemed inhibited in their play. Their previously strong flow of play was noticeably disrupted – it wasn't until the second half that SV 98 regained their high-pressure performance.
Ulrich Diehl, the Darmstadt-based publisher and operator of the news platform DA.news , was at the stadium that evening – here is his opinion on the events:
There was a complete lack of atmosphere for the first 10 minutes. The stadium was quiet and no louder than in the top league... something was really missing.
Exactly 10 minutes in, in the 11th minute of the game, the fan section starts up… The pyrotechnicians are also in action and then… cheers, the 1-0 scores… not really noticeable… some see it… then you hear it clearly… the stadium now turns dark grey and stinks… but the South Stand has done it… the 1-0 scores at exactly the right moment, like confirmation that fan culture achieves more than demagogues and populists.
The 10 minutes of silence were more frightening than the drum rolls of the fans… only the pyrotechnics are debatable…
After 30 minutes, the pyrotechnicians in the away fans' section are also in action... but much smaller... there are fewer of them, after all...
A foul in the Lilies' penalty area is penalized as a penalty kick… 1:1.
The atmosphere in the stadium is getting tougher…
Nine minutes of added time in the first half is presented by Bauhaus…For this, the stadium clock remains at 45 minutes…two players are substituted for SV 98 and the substitution is also presented and immediately has an effect 2:2 by Lidberg… Fraser immediately makes it 3:2 after another double substitution.Marvin scores the 4:2 goal in the 78th minute. The €500 goal bonus is displayed again.
“We are the Heiners… no one can beat us…”
The Jonathan Heimes stage is rocking with joy… Great game and a fantastic atmosphere. Apart from the pyrotechnics, the fans were amazing.
My opinion:Just drop the pyrotechnics nonsense, nobody needs it, you're strong enough as you are.
