Ice-cold in front of goal, ice-cold in the stadium – in frosty temperatures around minus five degrees Celsius, SV Darmstadt 98 won a thrilling match against SpVgg Greuther Fürth 4-2 (1-1) . This means the Lilies remain undefeated at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor and, with 24 points, solidify their place in the top group of the 2. Bundesliga.
The team from southern Hesse made their mark early on: After a cross from Sergio López, Fraser Hornby was perfectly positioned and scored with a well-placed shot to make it 1-0 (11'). SVD remained the more active team, but the visitors equalized through a controversial penalty. Futkeu confidently converted to make it 1-1 (38') – which was also the score at halftime.
After the break, the cold seemed to briefly affect Darmstadt as well: Futkeu put Fürth in the lead once again (52'). But the home side's response was swift. Just six minutes later, Isac Lidberg from a corner (58'), before Hornby finally turned the game around in the 64th minute with his second goal of the evening.
The final goal came in the 79th minute – and caused jubilation among the fans who had turned out in large numbers despite the freezing cold: Merveille Papela rose highest after a corner and headed in the 4:2 final score.
With this strong performance, SV Darmstadt 98 maintains its home record and shows that it remains composed and strong even in difficult conditions.
