An emotional evening of football at the Böllenfalltor: SV Darmstadt 98 defeated Karlsruher SC 3-2 (1-1) in a floodlit match on Saturday evening nine consecutive competitive fixtures . Playing in front of a vibrant crowd, the Lilies turned the game around after falling behind and, with 29 points from 15 games, their position in the top half of the table.
From the outset, the team from southern Hesse dominated the game, controlling both the ball and their opponents, but without capitalizing on their superiority early on. Despite 70 percent possession , it wasn't until the 14th minute that Isac Lidberg had the first good chance with a header. Shortly afterward, Killian Corredor narrowly missed (18th minute).
Out of nowhere, KSC took the lead: Matej Maglica unfortunately deflected a cross into his own net (38'). However, Darmstadt responded strongly – and were rewarded before halftime. After a foul on Luca Marseiler , Marco Richter curled the resulting free kick beautifully into the top corner – 1-1 (45+1').
After the break, Darmstadt continued to press forward. Just three minutes had been played when Lidberg calmly slotted home a rebound to give them a 2-1 lead (48'). But the visitors struck back: Schleusener capitalized on a lapse in concentration and equalized in the 60th minute.
Darmstadt's response was swift – and it came from the unlucky player who had scored the first goal: After a free kick from Richter , Maglica rose highest and headed home to make it 3-2 (63'). The center-back thus restored Darmstadt's lead – and ultimately secured a well-deserved home victory for the team from southern Hesse.
In an intense final phase, SV 98 left nothing to chance and celebrated the next three points under floodlights in front of their own fans.
