Discover wild plants and experience biodiversity in the city – a hands-on activity for everyone
To mark the International Day for Biological Diversity on Thursday, May 22, 2025 , the science city of Darmstadt is participating in the nationwide #Krautschau . The aim is to raise awareness of the global extinction of species – and at the same time to discover the often overlooked plant diversity in the city .
Participate, observe, protect – on a discovery tour through Darmstadt
at 4 p.m. in Darmstadt, several guided walks will take place, during which experts from the Environmental Office , the BUND (Friends , the NABU ( , and the Darmstadt Adult Education Center will join interested participants in searching for and identifying wild plants in the city. The focus will be on small plants growing in cracks in walls, between paving stones, or in green spaces. The event will conclude around 6 p.m. at Schlossgartenplatz (Palace Garden Square ).
At the same time, the nature demonstration garden at Schlossgartenplatz and label plants and purchase seeds from 4 pm onwards . Spontaneous participation is also possible. The event concludes with a get-together over drinks and snacks .
Making biodiversity visible in the heart of the city
Environmental officer Michael Kolmer emphasizes:
“The campaign thrives on participation. It is a great opportunity to discover the hidden diversity of urban nature and to strengthen awareness of the value of wild plants.”
