Twenty key measures for greater climate resilience in the city
Darmstadt. The city council of the Science City of Darmstadt adopted the Integrated Climate Adaptation Plan . The concept was developed in a two-year participatory process involving municipal departments, municipal enterprises, associations, initiatives, scientific institutions , and the Climate Protection and Nature Conservation Advisory Board.
The plan contains a comprehensive urban climate analysis of existing and expected future climate changes. From this, twenty concrete measures to make Darmstadt more resilient to heavy rain, heat, and drought

The measures focus on the key areas of "sponge city , "blue-green infrastructure , "nature-based solutions," and "climate-adapted construction ." These include the establishment of an early warning system for heavy rain , flood prevention through unsealing and water-optimized urban spaces , as well as the preservation and expansion of urban green spaces .
Climate Protection Director Michael Kolmer emphasizes:
"Climate adaptation is a city-wide task. It's also about engaging citizens and businesses in self-protection and transforming their living and working environments to be climate-resilient."
Citizen participation and federal support
participation formats were implemented as part of the project . The district-specific suggestions submitted by citizens were incorporated into the catalogue of measures.
The implementation of the climate adaptation plan will be supported by a funded position for climate adaptation management . The project is financed through the German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change (DAS) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) – with a funding rate of 90 percent .
