Online applications and optimized processes significantly reduce processing times
Following the optimization of the organizational structure and the implementation of modern technical tools, citizens benefit from significantly improved processes and new digital services at the city's driver's license office. This was pointed out by Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey.
A key component is the introduction of several online application forms, which are now available via the city's website. These include, among others, the initial application for a driver's license and the application to exchange an old driver's license for the new EU driver's license. Personal appearances are no longer required for these applications. A digital identity card is also not needed for the driver's license exchange, as the application process is entirely electronic.
To further expedite processes, the previous paper application system has been abolished. The driver's license authority now primarily operates with scheduled in-person appointments, while online applications can be submitted at any time. This change has reduced the average processing time to just a few days.
In parallel, new staff were hired for the service counter. Furthermore, the driver's license office has moved to new, modernly equipped premises. The redesigned service counter area with an adjoining waiting area offers improved conditions for consultations and faster processing. Personal appointments are only possible by prior arrangement.
Appointments can be booked online up to 14 days in advance, as well as on the day itself. New appointments for the same day are released daily between 7 and 8 a.m. The driver's license office is closed to the public only on Wednesdays.
In cooperation with the Technical Inspection Authority of TÜV Hessen, a digital interface was also developed. This enables direct data transfer after the inspection order has been approved, thus eliminating the previously necessary mailing of prepared driver's license documents.
From the beginning of February 2026, test takers will receive a provisional driving licence immediately after passing their exam, entitling them to drive a motor vehicle right away. Information about passing the exam will be transmitted digitally to the driving licence authority. The card-format driving licence will then be ordered from the Federal Printing Office, produced within seven to ten days, and sent directly to the applicants.
