The city library presents international connections from October 1st to 31st
Darmstadt – The science city of Darmstadt invites visitors to a major exhibition at the city library in the Justus Liebig House starting October 1st. The exhibition focuses on Darmstadt's 17 city partnerships – from San Antonio (USA) to Nahariya (Israel).
The exhibition was created in cooperation between the city library and the Department of International Relations, supported by the Original Friends of Darmstadt's Partner Cities Association. Numerous books, exhibits, and illustrated volumes showcase Darmstadt's diverse relationships. The exhibition is complemented by travel guides from the partner regions. Most of the materials are available for loan.
“Bridges to the World”
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes: “Our city partnerships are bridges to the world. They create encounters, foster friendships, and enable international cooperation at the local level. With this exhibition, we want to inspire even more people in Darmstadt to explore these connections and actively participate in shaping them.”
City Councillor Holger Klötzner, responsible for the city library, adds: “City partnerships thrive on continuous exchange. Since this cannot always happen in person, media play an important role. That is why we are now giving this cornerstone of our partnerships a special platform.”
Simone Roth, head of the city library, invites: “We look forward to welcoming many visitors who can embark on this exciting journey through Darmstadt’s international relations.”
Tradition and new partnerships
The exhibition also recalls the town's history: the first partnerships were established in 1958 with Troyes (France) and Alkmaar (Netherlands). In the following years, Chesterfield, Graz, Trondheim, Bursa, and Plock, among others, were added. After German reunification, cities from the former Eastern Bloc, such as Freiberg, Gyönk, Szeged, Liepāja, and Uzhhorod, joined the network. Later, Saanen-Gstaad, Brescia, and Logroño were added to the list. The most recent partnerships are with San Antonio (2017) and Naharija (2024).
The exhibition can be viewed from October 1st to 31st during the regular opening hours of the city library.
