City Library presents international connections from 1 to 31 October
Darmstadt – The Science City of Darmstadt invites you to a major exhibition in the city library at the Justus Liebig House starting October 1. The focus will be on Darmstadt's 17 twin towns – from San Antonio (USA) to Nahariya (Israel).
The exhibition was created in cooperation between the City Library and the Department of International Relations, with support from the Original Circle of Friends of Darmstadt's Twin Cities. Numerous books, exhibits, and illustrated books illustrate Darmstadt's diverse relationships. The exhibition is complemented by travel guides from the twin regions. Many of the media are available for loan.
“Bridges to the World”
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes: "Our twin town partnerships are bridges to the world. They create encounters, foster friendships, and enable international cooperation at the local level. With this exhibition, we hope to inspire even more people in Darmstadt to explore these connections and help shape them themselves."
City Councilor Holger Klötzner, responsible for the city library, adds: "Twinning partnerships thrive on continuous exchange. Since this can't always happen in person, media plays an important role. That's why we're now giving this cornerstone of our partnerships a special platform."
Simone Roth, director of the city library, extends an invitation: "We look forward to welcoming many visitors who can embark on this exciting journey through Darmstadt's international relations."
Tradition and new partnerships
The exhibition also commemorates the region's origins: The first partnerships were established in 1958 with Troyes (France) and Alkmaar (Netherlands). In the following years, Chesterfield, Graz, Trondheim, Bursa, and Płock were added. After reunification, cities from the former Eastern Bloc, such as Freiberg, Gyönk, Szeged, Liepāja, and Uzhhorod, followed. Saanen-Gstaad, Brescia, and Logroño later joined the list. The most recent partnerships are with San Antonio (2017) and Nahariya (2024).
The exhibition will be on view from October 1 to 31 during the City Library's regular opening hours.
