The city of Darmstadt will drain its pond from October 14th – sticklebacks threaten biodiversity
The City of Darmstadt extensive maintenance work at the Goethe Pond on Herrgottsberg in Bessungen starting Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The aim of the work is to preserve and protect native amphibian populations . The reason for the intervention is a significant increase in the stickleback population , which was observed by the fisheries inspector. The work is expected to last approximately one week .
The high population of this fish species threatens the development and survival of amphibian species next year. To protect the sensitive ecosystems around the Goethe Pond, the pond will be drained . This will involve the removal of fish species not native to the area .
Transfer to other bodies of water
Where possible, the removed fish will be relocated to suitable bodies of water within the city limits . The aim is to restore the ecological balance in the Goethe Pond and to protect the natural habitats of amphibians.
The city expressly points out that releasing fish from private aquariums or garden ponds into public waters prohibited . Such actions can cause significant disturbance and ecological damage , permanently disrupting the natural balance.
