Mayor Benz: "We will solve the challenges in housing, commerce and infrastructure together."
Darmstadt/Griesheim. The City of Darmstadt and the City of Griesheim coordination agreement and a public-law agreement on Monday (November 3) to jointly advance the development of the former airfield site . The area, which was used by the US armed forces until 1992, lies west of the Darmstadt motorway interchange and borders directly on the Griesheimer Sand nature reserve .
The aim of the agreement is to closely integrate industrial park on the Darmstadt side (zoning plan procedure W 67 "Former Griesheim Airfield") and the residential area on the Griesheim side building land in both cities along Flughafenstraße (Airport Road to be coordinated.
Cooperation for sustainable urban development
“This contract marks an important milestone for the region,” emphasizes Mayor Hanno Benz . “It shows that we can only solve challenges in the areas of housing, commerce and infrastructure together – and that is exactly what Darmstadt and Griesheim are doing here.”
Griesheim's mayor, Geza Krebs-Wetzl, also speaks of a decisive step forward: "This contract is an important milestone for projects in southeast Griesheim. We can now resolutely tackle the next steps together."
The planned industrial park in Darmstadt is owned by the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) training center for the General Directorate of Customs there . As things stand, the project is not affected by the recently announced . "
Clear responsibilities and efficient processes
The agreement regulates, among other things, the coordination of development plans , traffic development , and the transfer of certain infrastructure and drainage tasks from Darmstadt to Griesheim.
Planning Director Michael Kolmer emphasizes the importance of the coordinated development: “It guarantees legal certainty and urban planning quality. The planned industrial park in Darmstadt and the new residential quarter in Griesheim complement each other ideally and create an urban environment with jobs and urgently needed housing.”
City Treasurer André Schellenberg adds: “With the delegation agreement, we ensure clear responsibilities and efficient processes. It creates planning certainty for investors and citizens – and is also economically sensible for both municipalities.”
Effective from the beginning of 2026
After signing, the agreement will be submitted to the Darmstadt Regional Council for approval. The delegation agreement will come into effect on January 1, 2026. At the same time, the statutes of both cities will be amended to ensure a legally sound transition.
