The city council approves a comprehensive upgrade as part of the "Social Cohesion" program
The Darmstadt City Council, in its meeting on March 5th, approved the comprehensive redesign of the green space "Im Tiefen See". The aim is to create an accessible and inclusive open space in the Pallaswiesen and Morneweg districts that combines recreation, play, and sports. The project is being financed through the federal and state government program "Social Cohesion" .
Play, sport and relaxation combined – design in three areas
The new green space will be divided into three zones: a sports area with a football pitch and calisthenics equipment , a play area with a water play area and inclusive play equipment , and a relaxation area with lawns, seating, and nature experiences . A central feature is the "play corridor ," which connects the different areas through a network of recreational activities.
Urban development with a social focus
“This upgrade sends an important signal for socially just urban development,” emphasizes Mayor Barbara Akdeniz. People with diverse needs were involved in the planning process from an early stage – including children and young people. The goal was to implement an inclusive concept tailored to the needs of the community.
City Councillor Michael Kolmer adds: “We are creating a green oasis of relaxation in the heart of the city, which is accessible to all Darmstadt residents – regardless of individual abilities.”
Promotion and citizen participation
The project is a key component of the Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK) and aims to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood in the long term. It is financed with funds already approved from the "Social Cohesion" . Extensive public participation, particularly in the events of summer 2024, ensured that numerous suggestions from residents were taken into account.
