New location on Martinspfad is intended to improve service and working conditions
The joint public health department of the city of Darmstadt and the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg will be located on the campus of the former Marienhospital Darmstadt at Martinspfad 72 starting in early 2027. This move will significantly improve the facilities for efficient and citizen-oriented service provision. The corresponding lease agreement with the new owner of the property was successfully negotiated and approved by the board and the general assembly of the Zweckverband (special-purpose association) with overwhelming support.
“We are pleased to have found a property at the new location that will offer modern and functional premises for both the citizens and the employees of the health department,” explain the chairpersons of the board of the special-purpose association, district councilor Christel Sprößler and city treasurer André Schellenberg.
Current location in dire need of renovation
The building currently in use at Niersteiner Straße 3 dates back to the 1960s and has remained virtually unchanged since then. Expert reports indicate that energy-efficient and structural renovations would be uneconomical. Furthermore, the building's layout is unsuitable for current requirements and offers insufficient space.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the assumption of additional responsibilities, and the associated increase in staff, it became necessary to rent additional space on the grounds of the former building authority on Bessunger Straße. As this property is also in need of renovation and is slated for eventual sale, the health department's previous location had no long-term future.
Modern working conditions and good accessibility
The new location on Martinspfad is currently being renovated by the owner to meet the requirements of the public health department. Three floors of the former ward building are being leased. Plans include modern working conditions and good accessibility via public transport stops such as Böllenfalltor and Marienhospital.
Especially for visitors from the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, the parking situation is also an advantage. The new location offers ample visitor parking, which was not possible at the previous site.
Opportunity for urban development
The move also offers advantages from an urban development perspective. "The new premises have a long history of serving the health of the citizens. Its use by the public health department contributes to strengthening and maintaining the Marienhospital health campus," emphasizes City Treasurer André Schellenberg. At the same time, new possibilities open up for the vacated spaces on Niersteiner Straße, which could be used in the future for urgently needed housing.
