The science city of Darmstadt is raising awareness among its citizens about heat protection in summer
The city of Darmstadt, specializing in science, will participate in the nationwide Heatwave Action Day on Wednesday, June 4th . Between 12 pm and 6 pm, various city departments will provide information on health precautions during summer heat – with a focus on vulnerable population groups.
The Protestant University of Applied Sciences , the Healthy City Coordination Office , the Early Intervention Network Coordination Office within the Youth Welfare Office , and the Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation . In addition to informational materials, interactive activities for children and adults invite participation and engagement.
Information resources and cool places at a glance
"The information booth provides comprehensive and clear information on heat prevention," explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz . "Knowledge of appropriate protective measures is essential, especially for people with increased health risks – such as older people or pregnant women."
Last year, Darmstadt's heat action plan adopted. One of its key measures is the so-called "cool spot maps ," which are now available online.
New drinking water fountains and cooling oases in the city center
City Councillor Michael Kolmer , Head of the Department for Planning, Construction, Environment and Climate Protection, emphasizes the practical relevance of the maps: "The maps and the city atlas show places of well-being such as parks, outdoor swimming pools, as well as drinking water fountains and refill stations in the city area. Three new fountains at Luisenplatz , in Ludwigstraße and at Ludwigsplatz complement the offer."
Professor Alexandra Rau also supporting the initiative on site with her students. She emphasizes: "Such services are particularly important for vulnerable groups such as homeless people or the elderly."
