The city is providing digital maps to better assess flood risks
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, is now providing high-resolution heavy rainfall hazard maps on its website. These maps offer residents an initial assessment of how severely their neighborhoods might be affected by heavy rainfall events. They can be accessed at www.darmstadt.de/klimaschutz in the "Heavy Rainfall Hazard Maps" section.
The maps were created as part of the city's heavy rain preparedness plan in cooperation with the Darmstadt-based engineering firm Dahlem. They show potential flood depths and surface water flow directions . Information leaflets, presentation materials, and general advice on heavy rain preparedness are also included.
Basis for personal provision and future measures
"The maps serve as an initial risk assessment," explains climate protection officer Michael Kolmer. The next step will be a risk analysis with a comprehensive action plan. The goal is to make flooding more resilient
Private homeowners are also called upon to take personal responsibility for their own financial security. Kolmer mentions the following preventative measures, among others:
- the installation of backflow preventers,
- Flood barriers at house entrances,
- Green roofs,
- the dismantling of sealed surfaces
- as well as the use of cisterns for rainwater retention.
The initiative is part of the municipal climate adaptation strategy and is intended to help strengthen resilience to extreme weather events.
