Barrier-free redesign of the public space at Saladin-Eck will start in summer 2026
Darmstadt – The city council of Darmstadt, a city of science, approved the redesign of the public traffic area at the so-called Saladin Corner (Landgraf-Georg-Straße 3) at its meeting on Wednesday (24th). The reason for this is the construction of the new International House of the Technical University of Darmstadt, which will serve as an international service and meeting center.
The public footpath at this location connects the market square, Holzstraße, and the Goldene Krone inn, and is an important accessible pedestrian route. The planned reorganization of the area, including the relocation of overhead line masts and switch cabinets for the tram system, will create a new entrance to the city center and a spacious plaza for the new building.
Accessible pathways and new recreational areas
Pedestrian access will be rerouted parallel to the building and outside the railway tracks, significantly improving accessibility. A tree bed will be created in front of the main entrance of the International House, flanked by bicycle parking facilities. The necessary electrical cabinets will be concealed and integrated into benches.
The square will be paved with concrete pavers, the same type used at Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz. The material meets accessibility requirements in terms of color and texture.
Construction schedule
A rail replacement bus service will be in operation for approximately eight weeks during the construction work. The project will be carried out by TU Darmstadt, with construction starting immediately after the next Heinerfest festival during the summer holidays of 2026.
