Insights into Old and New Mausoleums as well as the Herff Mausoleum on 14 September
On Open Monument Day, Sunday, September 14, 2025, three important mausoleums in Darmstadt will open their doors. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to explore the Old and New Mausoleums on Rosenhöhe, as well as Herff's Expressionist Mausoleum at the Old Cemetery. Tours are offered by staff from the Lower Monument Protection Authority and are free of charge.
Mausoleums on the Rosenhöhe
The Old Mausoleum was designed by Georg Moller in 1826 and expanded in 1869/70. Together with the New Mausoleum, built between 1905 and 1910, and the adjacent open graves, it defines Rosenhöhe as a grand ducal burial site. Visitors can view the interior, decorated with mosaics, marble tombstones, and paintings, on Heritage Day.
Herff Mausoleum
Another highlight is Herff's Mausoleum at the main entrance to the Old Cemetery. Featuring reliefs by Johannes Ilmari Auerbach, the building is unique in Darmstadt. On Heritage Day, visitors can view the burial chamber, the gallery, and the exterior.
Registration required
Registration for the tours is possible starting Monday, September 8, 2025, at www.darmstadt.de/denkmalschutz . The exact times will be announced upon registration.
Information stand at Rosenhöhe
The Lower Monument Protection Authority will be providing information about its work and publications at the entrance to Rosenhöhe in front of the teahouse from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Rosenhöhe Park Friends Association will also be there.
Since Rosenhöhe and the Old Cemetery are burial sites, we ask that you behave appropriately. Tours are suitable for schoolchildren accompanied by adults, but are not wheelchair accessible.
