Insights into Old and New Mausoleums as well as the Mausoleum of Herff on September 14th
On Open Monument Day, Sunday, September 14, 2025, three important mausoleums in Darmstadt will open their doors. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to explore the Old and New Mausoleums on Rosenhöhe, as well as the expressionist Mausoleum by Herff at the Old Cemetery. Guided tours will be offered by staff of the Lower Monument Protection Authority and are free of charge.
Mausoleums on the Rosenhöhe
The Old Mausoleum was designed by Georg Moller in 1826 and expanded in 1869/70. Together with the New Mausoleum, built between 1905 and 1910, and the adjacent open-air graves, it defines Rosenhöhe as the grand ducal burial site. Visitors can tour the interior, adorned with mosaics, marble tombstones, and paintings, on Heritage Day.
Mausoleum of Herff
Another highlight is the Herff Mausoleum at the main entrance of the Old Cemetery. The building, featuring reliefs by Johannes Ilmari Auerbach, is unique in Darmstadt. On Open Monument Day, visitors can view the burial chamber, the gallery, and the exterior.
Registration required
Registration for the guided tours will be possible from Monday, September 8, 2025, at www.darmstadt.de/denkmalschutz . The exact times will be announced upon registration.
Information booth at Rosenhöhe
The Lower Monument Protection Authority will be providing information about its work and publications at the entrance to Rosenhöhe, in front of the teahouse, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Friends of Rosenhöhe Park Association will also be present.
As Rosenhöhe and the Old Cemetery are burial sites, visitors are asked to behave respectfully. Guided tours are suitable for schoolchildren accompanied by adults, but are not wheelchair accessible.
