The serious game "Hidden Codes" addresses radicalization in social media
The city of Darmstadt is actively addressing right-wing extremist radicalization on social media. In a collaboration between media education departments, the youth education center, and municipal youth centers, the serious game "Hidden Codes" from the Anne Frank Educational Center is being offered to young people.
The mobile learning game will be presented in municipal youth centers in March and April 2025 and will allow young people to playfully engage with symbols, codes and narratives of the right-wing scene .
Learning through play: Recognizing radicalization and reacting appropriately
“Being able to categorize right-wing content isn’t always easy. Knowing relevant symbols, codes, and narratives of the right-wing scene can help,” explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz . “It’s therefore important to focus on digital environments. Educational programs must address this to empower young people.”
The learning game "Hidden Codes" places participants in a simulated social media environmentwhere they create their own profiles, respond to posts, and interact with programmed users. In this way, they can playfully expand their media literacy and learn to recognize far-right content and respond appropriately.
The program is part of political education work and is intended to address Islamist radicalization.
