Concert series in St. Ludwig from August 23 to September 14, 2025 – free admission
Darmstadt. Two anniversaries, one stage: St. Ludwig's invites you to a special concert series in late summer 2025. Under the motto "20 Years of the Winterhalter Organ – 30 Years of the Darmstadt Vocal Ensemble," the traditional organ weeks from August 23 to September 14 – with top-class guests, diverse formats, and free admission to all events.
Musical diversity between Baroque, Jazz and Electronic music
The concert series begins on Saturday, August 23 , at 6 p.m. with a festive opening concert by Albrecht Koch , cathedral organist from Darmstadt's twin city Freiberg. The program includes works by Bach, Widor, and Karg-Elert.
One week later, on August 30th “Bach arranged” follows : Church musician Jorin Sandau shows, using arrangements by Marcel Dupré among others, how the organ as an instrument has been further developed over the centuries.
On September 6th at 6 pm, saxophone and organ will meet in the popular wine festival concert Christian Segmehl (saxophone) and Johannes Mayr (Stuttgart Cathedral organist) will present a cheerful and sonorous program.
Organ Night & Guided Tours: Sound Art for Every Generation
On Saturday, September 13th, the grand organ night begins at 6 pm , where music lovers can look forward to a diverse evening program:
- 6:00 p.m. – “Two on a bench…” – Organ music for four hands with Thomas Drescher & Jorin Sandau
- 7:30 p.m. – “The Best of 30 Years” – A cappella concert and organ music with the Darmstadt Vocal Ensemble
- 9:15 p.m. – “Bach meets Electro” – Experimental finale with Vera Klaiber & nandman
The organ weeks will conclude on Sunday, September 14th at 11:45 am : Church musician Jorin Sandau will offer an organ tour for the Open Monument Day, including an insight into the planned organ overhaul in 2025/26.
It will also be musically exciting for children: On Sunday, September 21st at 4 pm, young guests can help assemble an organ from a kit during an organ tour for World Children's Day – a playful journey of discovery through the inner workings of a fascinating instrument.
Venue & Admission
All concerts take place in the St. Ludwig Church , located at Wilhelminenstraße 9 in Darmstadt. Admission is free ; donations are welcome. Further information can be found on the St. Ludwig Church website.
