Certification of the city and partner companies for sustainable tourism
Darmstadt was officially recognized as a "sustainable travel destination" and now bears the renowned seal of Tourcert. In addition, ten local partner companies received the certification as a "partner sustainable travel destination". The ceremonial handover of the certificates took place in the Sitte restaurant and marked a significant step towards sustainable tourism development.
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasized: “Our city combines innovative strength with quality of life and uses tourism that brings the environment, business and society in line. The certification as a 'sustainable travel destination' underlines our commitment to further develop the tourism location responsibly and resilient. This is how we secure competitiveness, added value and a high quality of stay for guests and locals alike. ”
The certification process included several phases. First, the current situation in Darmstadt was analyzed based on various criteria such as quality awareness, economic stability, regional economic cycles and resource management. On this basis, an improvement program was created with concrete goals and measures, such as sustainable offer design, tourism acceptance as well as the common good and quality of life.

A central aspect of the project was the integration of local partner companies that represent the diversity of Darmstadt. The first certified partners include:
- Hotelery : Best Western Hotel Darmstadt , Greet Hotel Darmstadt , Hotel Stadt Heidelberg , Lufthansa Seeheim
- Gastronomy : Braustübl ' , Restaurant Sitte
- Culture & Leisure : Bioversum Jagdschloss Kranichstein , Hofgut Oberfeld , Climbing Forest Darmstadt
- Event industry : Science and Congress Center
- intestinal city
This partner network is continuously expanded. Interested companies can register as a partner at the Darmstadt Marketing GMB H at any time.
Anja Herdel , Managing Director of Darmstadt Marketing GmbH, explained: “The certification process gave us many new impulses for our work and the future orientation of offers and events. We are pleased that our partners are on the way and the partner network reflects Darmstadt's diversity - from hotel industry and gastronomy to culture and leisure. Together we strengthen the tourist offer and invite other companies to join. "
The entire process was documented transparently in a sustainability report and evaluated by independent experts as part of an audit. There was a on-site appointment in Darmstadt, including the visit of three partner companies. Finally, the result was passed by an expert commission.
Tourcert's criteria catalogs are based on international quality and environmental standards and are based on the regulations of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
With the certification as a "sustainable travel destination", Darmstadt has taken a significant step towards sustainable tourism development. However, this process is only the beginning: continuous cooperation with local actors is essential to achieve the common goal of sustainable destination.
The state of Hesse also attaches great importance to sustainability in tourism. As part of the process "On the way to the sustainable travel destination Hessen", all ten Hessian destinations have undergone a certification process and successfully completed by the end of March. Hessen is the first area of area to implement this comprehensive approach to sustainable tourism development. This joint commitment underlines the commitment of Darmstadt and Hesse, both guests and locals to offer a future -proof and livable environment.
