The Art Nouveau building at the Dornheim Bridge opens its doors on September 14th
Darmstadt. On Sunday, September 14, 2025, during the nationwide Open Monument Day, visitors will have the rare opportunity to tour former railway water tower at the Dornheimer Bridge 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. , including a look inside the historic bunker and the tower's interior.

A monument with history and vision
The slate-roofed tower was in 1911 and once served to supply water to the train station and the steam locomotives stationed there. With the electrification of the railway, the building lost its function in 1970. Its planned demolition in 1978 was prevented by civic engagement: Albrecht Pfohl acquired the tower in 1986 and converted it into a cultural project.
Today, the tower is considered one of the most important architectural monuments of transport and technological history in Hesse . As an architectural legacy of the Art Nouveau era, it is also a landmark of the science city of Darmstadt. After 40 years of private restoration and maintenance, the owner is now seeking a successor who will preserve and further develop the historical character of the building.
