400 visitors – continuation of the event series planned for 2026
The Days of Democracy, organized for the first time by AWO Darmstadt, concluded with an overwhelmingly positive outcome. Around 400 visitors participated in the events. "We have decided to repeat this series of events in 2026," explained Michael Siebel, Chairman of AWO Darmstadt.
The AWO (Workers' Welfare Association) launched the series in response to attacks by right-wing groups, the rise of a party with partially anti-constitutional views, and everyday racism and anti-Semitism. The aim is to send a clear message in support of democracy and to create spaces for exchange, discussion, and education.
Highlight with cabaret artist Hans-Joachim Heist
A particular highlight was the closing event with cabaret artist Hans-Joachim Heist and his program "I Can't Laugh About That" in the packed halbNeun Theater. Admission was based on donations. A total of €1,640 was raised, which will benefit the AWO Darmstadt (Workers' Welfare Association) and the "Grandmas Against the Right" initiative. The AWO will use the funds primarily to enable children to attend the theater.
Extensive program ranging from lectures to exhibitions
The program for the Days of Democracy included a lecture on Darmstadt's democratic reconstruction after World War II, a historical walking tour, a presentation on children's rights, a panel discussion with professors from the Technical University of Darmstadt on right-wing populism, an intergenerational dialogue, and an accompanying exhibition. Most events took place at the Heiner Lehr Center of the Workers' Welfare Association (AWO) in Darmstadt. The series was supported by Merck Fördert.
“Protecting and preserving democracy, highlighting its advantages and conveying the knowledge that it is the best form of government in the world remains our permanent task,” said Siebel.
