400 visitors – Continuation of the event series planned for 2026
The Days of Democracy, hosted for the first time by the AWO Darmstadt, concluded with an overall positive outcome. Around 400 attendees participated. "We have decided to repeat this series of events in 2026," explained Michael Siebel, chairman of the AWO Darmstadt.
The AWO launched the series in response to attacks by right-wing groups, the rise of a partially anti-constitutional party, and everyday racism and anti-Semitism. The aim is to send a clear message for democracy and create spaces for exchange, discussion, and education.
Highlight with cabaret artist Hans-Joachim Heist
A special highlight was the closing event with cabaret artist Hans-Joachim Heist and his show "Darüber kann ich nicht lachen" (I can't laugh about that) in the packed halbNeun Theater. Admission was funded by donations. A total of €1,640 was raised, which will benefit the AWO Darmstadt and the Omas gegen Rechts initiative. The AWO will use the funds, in particular, to enable theater visits for children.
Wide program from lectures to exhibitions
The Days of Democracy program included a lecture on the democratic reconstruction of Darmstadt after World War II, a historical tour, a lecture on children's rights, a panel discussion with professors from TU Darmstadt on right-wing populism, a generational dialogue, and an accompanying exhibition. Most of the events took place at the Heiner Lehr Center of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Darmstadt (Workers' Welfare Association). The series was supported by Merck Fördert.
“Protecting and preserving democracy, highlighting its advantages and conveying the knowledge that it is the best form of government in the world remains our permanent task,” said Siebel.
