The "paving" competition runs from March to October
Darmstadt will once again participate in the nationwide "abpflastern" campaign to remove impervious surfaces, March 21, 2026.
More green spaces for a better urban climate
According to the city, measures to remove impervious surfaces are intended to improve the urban climate, promote biodiversity, and enhance the cityscape. The campaign runs until October 31, 2026 , and is part of a nationwide competition in which cities compete against each other.
Participation of the entire city society
Climate protection officer Michael Kolmer emphasizes that the campaign is aimed at everyone: citizens, associations, universities, companies and the administration itself should participate.
The plan includes joint actions in which sealed surfaces are transformed into green spaces – for example, through wildflowers, perennials, shrubs or trees.
Darmstadt competes in the big city league
In this competition, cities of different size categories compete against each other. Darmstadt is participating in the league of large cities. Both municipal and private land areas are counted towards the overall result.
