City of Darmstadt initiates proceedings to reverse the Aldi development / Public participation planned
The city council of Darmstadt, a city of science, initiated the process to repeal the project-specific development plan A 43 at its meeting on Wednesday (May 7). This plan concerned the property at Frankfurter Landstraße 171-173, where a new Aldi supermarket was originally planned. However, the supermarket chain withdrew the project.
“The project has met with resistance from large sections of the Arheilgen citizenry,” said Mayor Hanno Benz. “Now that Aldi has decided not to pursue the project further, the contractually agreed deadlines are no longer valid. The city is therefore obligated to initiate the cancellation procedure.”
The decision to initiate the cancellation procedure, which the city council will make a final decision on June 24, is accompanied by a transparent public participation process. "We want to work together with the citizens to determine how the vacated area should be used in the future," Benz continued. He also emphasized that the city will continue to cooperate with Aldi.
City planning director Michael Kolmer added: “With the formal repeal, we are creating clarity for all parties involved. Urban development needs reliable framework conditions – we are now implementing that.”
The documents relating to the repeal – including the justification and the existing development plan – will be published on the city planning office's website for at least 30 days after the public announcement. They can also be viewed at the city planning office at Mina-Rees-Straße 12.
After completion of the procedure, the previously valid development plans A 7.1 (“An der Reitbahn”) and A 7.2 (“Um die Kleine Brückenstraße”) will regain legal force.
