Jacqueline Weber confirmed as chair - focus on social justice and living space policy
Darmstadt, July 11, 2025 -The district association Darmstadt-Dieburg of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) has elected a new board. In the constituent session, Jacqueline Weber (IGBCE) unanimously confirmed as district chairwoman. Peter Grünig (ver.di) and Julian Gabel (IG Metall) were elected as their deputies .
The new board also includes Maria Lienert (NGG) , Monika Jowanowitsch (IG Bau) , Felicitas Hemel (GEW) and Sedar Canoglu (EVG) . Walter Busch-Hübenbeck and secretary Thomas Tesar were adopted .
The focus on social division and lack of living space
Jens Liedtke , Managing Director of the DGB region of South Hesse, emphasized the central importance of a strong trade union movement: "A society in which profits are concentrated at the top and loads are distributed below, loses their balance and endangers their democracy." He warned of an erosion of social achievements such as the eight-hour day , continued wages in the event of illness or the statutory minimum wage . According to Liedtke, distribution equality is a central question of the future.
Liv Dizinger from the DGB district of Hessen-Thuringia took up an urgent topic in her presentation: the lack of affordable living space in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. According to numbers from the Pestel Institute, around 1,300 new apartments required there every year-however, only 839 were completed . The number of social housing has declined, in Dieburg rents have increased by over 70 percent since 2015 .
The central demands of the DGB include:
- better financial resources for housing construction
- The targeted expansion of social housing
- The strengthening of public housing companies
- A social land policy
- A more effective rental price brake at the state level
- as well as the establishment of a carrier for trainees based on the model of the student union.
The new chairwoman Jacqueline Weber was pleased with the rejuvenation and balanced gender distribution in the committee: "We not only have a strong team, but also significantly more women on the board - that is a good signal."
