New image capture device in the residents' registration office replaces paper photos for identity documents
Riedstadt. A new photo capture device from the Federal Printing Office is now in use at the residents' registration and passport office in the town of Riedstadt. This allows citizens to have digital, biometric passport photos taken on-site for their identification documents. The fee is a flat rate of €6 – in addition to the regular costs for an identity card or passport.
The basis for the change is a nationwide regulation: From May 1, 2025, identity card authorities may only accept digital photographs . Paper photos will therefore be a thing of the past – also in Riedstadt.
External photographers are also possible – with certified cloud connectivity
Those who prefer to have their passport photo taken by an external photographer can still do so. However, the service provider must upload the photo to a cloud certified by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and issue a QR code for official processing. A list of suitable photographers can be found at:

Instructions for use by children and babies
The new recording device in Riedstadt is a floor-standing unit designed for people approximately 1.20 meters tall and above. For smaller children, aids such as stools are available. For infants, the office recommends using photographers with certified cloud connectivity, as recording at the office is technically not possible.
