On the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Regional Council provides information about its tasks and structures
As the Darmstadt Regional Council (RP) reports, the authority is actively involved in disaster relief in Hesse. On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13, the RP highlights its diverse tasks and structures in this area. These include not only preventative measures – such as flood protection along the Main and Rhine rivers – but also the coordination of relief efforts in crisis situations.
Emergency response team always ready for deployment
The Darmstadt Regional Council maintains a staff unit that operational around the clock and has been deployed, for example, in the construction of refugee accommodations. The disaster relief staff consists of specially trained employees of the authority who work closely with external experts. These procedures are regularly practiced to ensure smooth operation in an emergency.
In the event of major or cross-district crises – such as forest fires, industrial accidents, or floods – the task force can be convened to coordinate relief efforts. Appropriate operational plans are maintained for different scenarios.
Support, training and logistics
The regional council also manages state and federal disaster relief equipment, The authority also participates in the training of volunteer emergency responders
Most recently, the RP supported the deployment of Hessian forest fire units to France, where they participated in fighting fires for two weeks in the summer.
Regional President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt emphasizes:
"We take our responsibilities in disaster relief very seriously. Only if we are well prepared at all levels can we act quickly and efficiently in a crisis. At the same time, it is important that every single person informs and prepares themselves – this is more important today than ever before."
