The culture of a digital city discusses AI, life and death
With the project "Such a Theatrical Affair About Data," Kultur einer Digitalstadt eV continues its successful art and discourse format "The Poetry of Data." In cooperation with AI Theatre, several improvisational theatre performances, lectures, discussions, and performances will take place in Darmstadt, exploring social, ethical, and cultural questions surrounding artificial intelligence.
On Thursday, March 19, 2026, the question at the Moller House Theater will be: "Will AI make us immortal?" The improv actors of the AI Theatre will take to the stage together with an AI and develop the topic further live in front of an audience.
Between digital eternity and biological limits
Artificial intelligence is already changing our understanding of life, aging, and death. Digital avatars simulate the voices and personalities of deceased people, and medical AI systems promise new insights into diseases and aging processes.
But what are the societal consequences of this? Isn't dying also an evolutionary principle that enables renewal? How does our relationship to life change when memories are digitally preserved or lifespans are technologically extended? And how does an AI actually die?
These questions are improvised on stage and then discussed together afterwards.
Exchange with science and ethics
After the performance, director Stefan Kollmeier, curator Dr. Roland Lentz, and the actors of the AI Theatre will speak with invited experts and the audience.
Contributors include:
- Prof. Dr. Paul Rainey, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology
- Dr. Angela Rascher, AGAPLESION Institute for Theology, Diaconia and Ethics
- Dr. Patrick Schramowski, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Hessian.AI
