Intersection Dornheimer Weg / Michaelisstraße completely closed for two weeks – modernization for more efficient traffic flow
Darmstadt. The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, will begin extensive renovation work at the intersection of Dornheimer Weg and Michaelisstraße Monday, August 4, 2025. In addition to resurfacing the road, the entire traffic light system completely closed for approximately two weeks , with the exception of the right turn from Michaelisstraße onto Eifelring.
New technology for greater efficiency in traffic flow
The project focuses on improving the road surface and integrating modern traffic technology. "With the new control unit and the modernized infrastructure, we are bringing the traffic management system up to the latest technological standards. This will allow us to manage traffic volume more efficiently and according to demand in the future," explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey .
The road resurfacing project, costing approximately €115,000, includes the complete milling and replacement of the damaged asphalt surface layer, including new road markings and modern induction loops for the traffic light control system. Simultaneously, the external traffic signal system, modernized for around €77,000 €15,000 will be spent on a new control unit , which will allow for greater flexibility in traffic light programming in the future.
Despite suggestions received from the neighborhood council, the basic traffic light sequence remains unchanged. Instead, the city is focusing on improvements through optimized markings, lighting, and control technology.
Traffic restrictions and detours
During the construction period, the intersection will be closed to car traffic. Only the right turn from Michaelisstraße onto Eifelring will remain open. Detours have been set up .
- From A5/A672 or B26/Griesheim via Eifelring: From Maria-Goeppert-Straße diversion via Robert-Bosch-Straße and Zweifalltorweg.
- From the direction of Griesheim via Dornheimer Weg: No access to the intersection, diversion also via Maria-Goeppert-Straße, Robert-Bosch-Straße, Zweifalltorweg and further via Kirschenallee and Mainzer Straße to Michaelisstraße.
Impact on bus services and parking
Bus services will be rerouted via Rabenaustraße A no-stopping and no-parking zone is in effect there between Dornheimer Weg and Michaelisstraße/Im Harras . This measure was coordinated in advance with HEAG mobilo, DADINA, e-netz Südhessen, the fire department, and the police.
To minimize traffic disruption, the start of the work was deliberately scheduled for the summer holidays . Nevertheless, the city asks all road users for their understanding regarding any potential inconveniences.
