Funding enables the use of a modern drone for civil protection and rescue
The Hans Erich and Marie Elfriede Dotter Foundation is supporting the work of the drone unit of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) Darmstadt with funding for the purchase of modern technology. The new drone was symbolically handed over during a small ceremony on January 14th at the ASB base in Eberstadt.
Thanks from the air for the support
The unique expression of gratitude came quite literally from the air: A drone hovered above the grounds, its loudspeaker broadcasting words of thanks to Karl Georg Dotter . The chairman of the foundation's board, along with foundation representative Heidi Bittlingmaier, Günther Krupp managing director of the ASB regional association, also thanked the foundation for its support and expressed his admiration for the capabilities of the new technology.
Modern technology for complex operational situations
The funded drone is equipped with a loudspeaker, powerful spotlights, and a high-quality thermal imaging camera. It significantly expands the operational capabilities of the ASB drone squadron, particularly in complex and confusing situations within civil protection.
The drone squadron was established at ASB Darmstadt approximately three years ago and has since supported emergency services by providing an aerial overview. Its areas of operation include search and rescue operations, animal rescue, and reconnaissance during crises and hazardous situations.
Clear demonstration of deployment
During the handover ceremony, ASB volunteer Michael Dosch the unit's operation. Together with remote pilot Klaus Mannschott, a simulated search for a missing person was conducted. The drone demonstrated how spotlights and a thermal imaging camera can be used to locate a missing person. The guests were able to follow the operation live on a monitor from the drone camera's perspective.
Focus on voluntary engagement
Squadron leader Marco Zweifel emphasized the dedication of the approximately 20 volunteer remote pilots, who regularly participate in advanced training and conduct practice flights in their free time. The Dotter Foundation views its support of the drone squadron as a consistent implementation of its guiding principle of strengthening local resources and providing sustainable support for volunteer work.
