IG BAU tip for 4,050 trainees in Darmstadt: Help with questions about starting an apprenticeship
If things don't go smoothly when starting a career, young people in Darmstadt have a strong point of contact: Dr. Azubi – the digital advisory service of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB).
“From unpaid overtime and vacation bans to mobile phone bans – trainees often don't know where they stand,” says Bruno Walle , district chairman of the Industrial Union for Construction, Agriculture and the Environment (IG BAU) Rhine-Main. His tip for the approximately 4,050 trainees in Darmstadt: “Anyone with questions or problems can get prompt and professional help online at dr-azubi.de.”
Digital consultation hour for all training-related questions
The online service offers 24/7 support for all topics related to vocational training – whether it's about wages, overtime, vacation, working hours, or occupational health and safety . The portal also provides assistance in cases of workplace conflicts or when changing apprenticeship positions .
“Many young people have only been in their apprenticeships for a few weeks. For them, it’s all new territory,” explains Walle. “They especially need support and a point of contact if something goes wrong.”
Support from trade unions and works councils
The IG BAU union advises seeking dialogue early on in case of problems – with the works council , the union , or via the Dr. Trainee Service . "If trainees are constantly having to take on tasks that have nothing to do with their training, this should be addressed," says Walle.
Furthermore, IG BAU Rhein-Main the option of apprenticeship contracts reviewed to ensure compliance with all legal and collective bargaining regulations. The aim is to make the transition into working life fair and transparent for young people.
