Red card against Pfeiffer triggers first defeat since October
, Darmstadt 98 have failed to pick up any points in the league. They lost 1-3 (0-2) away to SG Dynamo Dresden
In the opening quarter of an hour, both teams were evenly matched. Possession was balanced, but the visitors from southern Hesse registered the more dangerous shots.
Controversial red card and a quickfire double before the break
Shortly before halftime, Patric Pfeiffer slipped in the penalty area and, in the ensuing scramble, caught his opponent. Referee Erbst deemed the incident a professional foul and showed him a red card (42'). A harsh decision, especially since a similar situation earlier involving Isac Lidberg had only resulted in a yellow card.
With a numerical advantage, the hosts ruthlessly exploited the extra space: Vermeij scored twice in first-half stoppage time (45+1, 45+2) and put Dresden on the road to victory within seconds.
Catch-up attempt after the restart
Eight minutes after the restart, the teams were evenly matched. Lemmer received a second yellow card (53rd minute) after two fouls in quick succession.
Darmstadt subsequently dominated possession but rarely found gaps against Dresden's deep-lying defense. Dangerous shots on goal were scarce. In the closing stages, Darmstadt threw everything forward – and were caught on the counter-attack. Daferner made it 3-0 in the 81st minute.
Despite the significant deficit, Darmstadt refused to give up. In the 90th minute, Yosuke Furukawa reacted quickest to a long-range shot from Niklas Schmidt, reducing the deficit to 1-3. During stoppage time, the Lilies launched several more attacks into the penalty area, but they were unable to add to their tally.
The unbeaten streak has thus come to an end – after a game that was open for a long time and was decisively turned by a key scene shortly before halftime.
