Increased controls are intended to improve road safety
With the start of the 2025 cycling season, the South Hesse Police Headquarters increased traffic controls . The focus will be on bicycles, e-scooters, and motorcycles, which are used more frequently during the warmer months. The aim is to improve road safety and proper road behavior .
E-scooters: Rules are often ignored
Violations regularly occur , particularly with electric micro-vehicles (e-scooters) , such as riding on sidewalks , driving under the influence of alcohol , or riding two people without permission . These violations are specifically checked during inspections and penalized if necessary.
"We are not concerned with sanctions, but with awareness. Anyone who travels on two wheels bears responsibility – for themselves and others," emphasizes a police spokesperson.
Key rules for e-scooters at a glance:
- Ride only on cycle paths or the roadway, not on sidewalks.
- Minimum age: 14 years
- Insurance and operating permits are mandatory.
- Alcohol limits apply as for motor vehicles
- Smartphones are forbidden while driving
- Only one person per e-scooter is allowed.
- Maximum speed: 20 km/h
