Proper disposal of medicines
On the occasion of the world day of environmental education, the own company for municipal tasks and services of the science city of Darmstadt (EAD) provides information about the correct disposal of medicines.
According to a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) from 2022, up to 50 percent of the household medication will become waste. According to information from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, non -consumed or expired medication should not be disposed of in the toilet, the sink or the drain.
The waste water is cleaned in the sewage treatment plant. However, since not all medication residues can be filtered out, these substances can also get into the respective water and flora and fauna damage.
To avoid this, the EAD citizens offers the opportunity to emit medicines in small quantities at the EAD pollutant mobile, which is traveling in Darmstadt in spring and autumn. The respective dates will be announced in good time. In the special waste collection point of the EAD (Sensfelderweg 33), large amounts of medication are also adopted. The special waste collection point is on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, disposal is also possible through residual waste. Pharmacies also offer to withdraw expired medicines.
