Community catering receives third consecutive award
The catering department of the municipal enterprise for public services and tasks of the City of Darmstadt has once again been recognized for its efforts to reduce food waste. The award from the "Out-of-Home Catering" competence center is retroactive to 2025 and marks the third consecutive year of recognition.
In September 2025, food waste was systematically measured in 21 schools over a four-week period. The resulting waste was recorded and analyzed in the school kitchens. The findings were then incorporated into menu planning, purchasing, and production processes.
Measures show measurable effect
“This third consecutive award demonstrates the long-term commitment of EAD's catering services. The measures are effective and have a positive impact on the amount of food waste. This success is a team effort: kitchen and serving staff, employees from purchasing and production – they are all involved in the process. The measurement will continue this year as well,” explains City Treasurer André Schellenberg.
The catering service prepares around 3,000 meals daily in eight production kitchens for daycare centers, primary and secondary schools in Darmstadt. The goal is to consistently reduce food waste and continuously optimize processes.
Sustainability as an integral component
Furthermore, the collection and analysis of food waste is part of the environmental management system according to ISO 14001. This standard helps organizations to systematically improve their environmental performance and to permanently establish sustainable processes.
This renewed award underlines the long-term commitment of Darmstadt's community catering service to resource conservation and sustainability.
