Autobahn GmbH warns of increased traffic volume on German motorways
With the start of the Easter holidays, the travel season begins for many families – and with it, a tense traffic situation on the motorways. The Federal Autobahn GmbH expects heavy travel around the Easter holidays, especially on the main north-south and east-west routes.
These days are considered particularly prone to traffic jams
- Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6: Slightly increased holiday traffic at the start of the first federal state school holidays
- Saturday, April 12: Heavy traffic due to the start of the holidays in the most populous countries.
- Maundy Thursday, April 17: High risk of traffic jams – holiday traffic meets commuter traffic
- Easter Monday, April 21: Heavy traffic due to return journeys from Easter holidays
- Friday, 25th to Saturday, 26th April: Return travel at the end of the holidays in many regions
The Autobahn GmbH recommends planning travel times outside of peak hours whenever possible and allowing sufficient breaks for longer journeys. Particularly in metropolitan areas such as the Rhine-Main region, around Frankfurt, Cologne, and Munich , longer delays are to be expected.
Tips for a relaxed journey
- Plan departure times in advance and pay attention to traffic forecasts
- Check alternative routes and use navigation services
- Take sufficient breaks in case of traffic jams or delays
- Provide drinks, snacks and entertainment for children
