Bach-Chor Darmstadt and Chamber Choir Marienhöhe bring romantic oratorio to the stage for the 100th anniversary of the school
The audience awaits a special musical event on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Marienhöhe community center: The Bach-Chor Darmstadt and the Chamber Choir Marienhöhe together shape a festive spring concert with the oratorio "Elias" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The occasion is the 100th anniversary of the Marienhöhe school center.
The oratorio "Elias", one of the most important works of romance, combines dramatic choirs with lyrical arias and tells of the Old Testament prophet Elias. The focus is on topics such as conflict, belief, life crises and hope - musically powerfully implemented in Mendelssohn's unmistakable sound language.
In the first part of the work, the Prophet Elias and the Baal priests collapse dramatically. In addition to the religious discussion, Mendelssohn also focuses on the elementary lack of water - a topic of current relevance. The second part reflects Elias' doubts, withdrawal and spiritual renewal. The highlight is the musically impressive Ascension of the Prophet, which completes the work in bright sounds.
The soloists Ursula Ott (soprano), Melanie Arnold (Alt), Mark Adler (tenor) and Hans Christoph Begemann (Bariton) are involved under the direction of Angela Geann-Anderbach. The choirs are accompanied by the Darmstadt Chamber Philharmonic.
Admission to the concert is free. Donations to support the event are welcome. Program books with all texts are available for 2 euros.
