The Bach Choir Darmstadt and the Marienhöhe Chamber Choir will perform a romantic oratorio to celebrate the school's 100th anniversary.
A special musical event awaits the audience on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Marienhöhe Community Center: The Bach Choir Darmstadt and the Marienhöhe Chamber Choir will jointly present a festive spring concert featuring the oratorio "Elijah" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The occasion is the 100th anniversary of the Marienhöhe School Center.
The oratorio "Elijah," one of the most important works of the Romantic era, combines dramatic choruses with lyrical arias and tells the story of the Old Testament prophet Elijah. At its core are themes such as conflict, faith, life crises, and hope – powerfully realized in Mendelssohn's unmistakable musical language.
In the first part of the work, the prophet Elijah and the priests of Baal clash dramatically. Alongside the religious conflict, Mendelssohn also focuses on the fundamental lack of water – a theme of contemporary relevance. The second part reflects Elijah's doubts, withdrawal, and spiritual renewal. The climax is the musically impressive ascension of the prophet, which concludes the work in radiant sounds.
Under the direction of Angela Gehann-Dernbach, the soloists Ursula Ott (soprano), Melanie Arnold (alto), Mark Adler (tenor), and Hans Christoph Begemann (baritone) will perform. The choirs will be accompanied by the Darmstadt Chamber Philharmonic.
Admission to the concert is free. Donations to support the event are welcome. Program booklets with all lyrics are available for €2.
