Hospital focuses on greater energy efficiency and sustainability
The Darmstadt Clinic has successfully had its energy management system certified. The goal is to continuously save energy and further optimize energy use.
“Climate protection is also health protection,” emphasizes Sven Axt, commercial director of the hospital. The hospital consumes approximately 37 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. Almost half of this is needed to heat the roughly 66,000 square meters of usable space. The main building was completed in 2020 as a new construction, meeting current insulation standards.
Annual efficiency improvement as a goal
With the certified energy management system, the hospital commits to becoming more energy-efficient every year and to further reducing consumption.
A four-person team led by energy management officer Andrey Hepting prepared the certification and impressed the TÜV Rheinland auditor with their organization, working methods and initial results.
Since 2025, the hospital has exclusively used Eurovent-certified air filters in its ventilation systems. These filters have high energy efficiency ratings up to A+ and are characterized by long service lives at low pressure differentials. According to the hospital, electricity consumption has also been sustainably reduced through the optimization of electrical systems and the use of energy-efficient technology.
The measures are intended to contribute to climate protection as well as reduce operating costs. The quality and safety of patient care will remain fully guaranteed.
