Green energy supplier combines contract signing with active climate protection in Germany
The Darmstadt-based green energy provider ENTEGA is setting an example for effective climate protection with a new offer: From now on, all new customers who sign a green electricity, green gas, or telecommunications contract will automatically receive a sponsorship for one square meter of peatland conservation in Germany. In addition to the new customer bonus, the so-called ENTEGA Peatland Conservation Promise in cooperation with the non-profit organization Mission to Marsh .
Peatlands as a key to climate protection
Peatlands are among the most effective natural carbon sinks worldwide. Although they cover only a relatively small portion of the Earth's land surface, they bind more carbon dioxide than all forests combined. In Germany, however, large parts of these ecosystems have been drained. As a result, they lose their storage function and instead release significant amounts of greenhouse gases.
ENTEGA CEO Thomas Schmidt emphasizes the project's approach: The goal is to make climate protection concrete and comprehensible and to combine sustainable energy supply with a particularly effective climate protection measure – directly on site in Germany.
Restoration through Mission to Marsh
The sponsorships are implemented through concrete restoration measures. These include stopping drainage, raising the water level, and reintroducing typical bog plants such as sphagnum mosses. In this way, bogs can once again act as carbon sinks, retain water, and provide habitats for specialized animal and plant species.
According to Mission to Marsh, peatland conservation has an immediate impact: once a peatland is rewetted, emissions are stopped and carbon is sequestered in the long term. At the same time, biodiversity, water balance, and regional climate adaptation benefit.
Historical development of the moors
After the last Ice Age, Germany was rich in moorlands. However, centuries of drainage for agriculture and peat extraction led to the almost complete loss of these ecosystems. Today, less than one percent of the original moorland areas are considered largely intact.
ENTEGA provides further information on its moorland protection pledge on its own website.
