The Darmstadt Secession presents an exhibition by the Leipzig artist from December 19, 2025 to January 24, 2026.
As the Darmstadt Secession announces, Leipzig artist Erik Weiser a comprehensive selection of his series replay , reflexio , and coleoptera , as well as other object-based works, at the Raum für Kunst gallery in Darmstadt. The exhibition, "Illusion of a Future," on Friday, December 19, 2025, at 7 p.m. and runs until January 24, 2026 .
Transformation of the ephemeral as an artistic principle
Erik Weiser (born 1978), a member of the Darmstadt Secession since 2016, frequently works with found and discarded materials. Through deconstruction, recontextualization, and experimental transformation, he demonstrates how the ephemeral can be revitalized. He describes his artistic approach as a play with ideas for the future that emerge from fragments of the past:
"In every new work that draws on the fragments and experiences of the past, the opportunity for transformation and an unexpected vitality arises."
Weiser studied at the University of Leipzig and has been working freelance since 2008. In 2019, he participated in the exhibition "100 Years of the Darmstadt Secession" at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt.
Works made from footballs, reflectors and disassembled Matchbox cars
For his series "replay, " Weiser deliberately uses secondhand footballs, which he has collected, disassembled, and cleaned throughout Europe. From their inner surfaces, he assembles graphic compositions – homages to artists such as Rothko, Picasso, and Miró.
In his series "reflexio," he uses commercially available plastic reflectors, such as those found in warning triangles, school bags, or construction site barriers. Through delicate arrangements, he creates wall-mounted images and three-dimensional sculptures that reflect light and simultaneously reference art historical forms such as the objet trouvé or mobile structures.
The object-like works in the series *Coleoptera* are based on Matchbox cars that he himself destroyed. From their individual parts, he creates newly painted structures with a metallic shimmer, reminiscent of insects and reflecting themes such as insect extinction and shattered childhood dreams.
Furthermore, Weiser presents objects whose materials he finds in so-called "non-places". Through reinterpretation and experimental manipulation, he gives them a new aesthetic and narrative function.
