Climate protection managers from the Groß-Gerau district visit EUMETSAT in Darmstadt
The climate protection managers of the Groß-Gerau district visited the European Agency for Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in Darmstadt. The focus of the exchange was the use of high-quality satellite data for municipal climate protection – including for the district-wide urban climate analysis.
The visit was initiated by the Climate Meeting Network, which is organized by the district's Climate Protection Department. Representatives from Riedstadt, Stockstadt, Mörfelden-Walldorf, Rüsselsheim, Raunheim, Groß-Gerau, Büttelborn, and the Groß-Gerau district participated. The full-size satellite models and the subsequent expert presentation were particularly impressive.
EUMETSAT, an international organization with 30 member states, operates a fleet of geostationary and polar satellites. These satellites provide precise data for weather, climate, and environmental monitoring – around the clock. A key component is its archive of satellite observations spanning over 40 years. This archive enables globally consistent long-term data series, which are essential for the analysis and assessment of climate change.
In addition to providing weather and climate data, EUMETSAT is a key partner in the European Earth observation program Copernicus. Copernicus data was also used for the urban climate analysis of the Groß-Gerau district.
Furthermore, participants gained insights into the next generation of Metop satellites, which are expected to provide even more precise and comprehensive information for climate research in the future. All EUMETSAT data is freely available and used worldwide by municipalities, government agencies, and research institutions.
