A nationwide campaign draws attention to the European idea – a HEAG mobilo bus drives through the city in a European design
Since May 1, 2025, a public bus in Darmstadt has been sporting a striking European design. This initiative is part of a statewide campaign by the state of Hesse, which, as part of European Weeks, highlights the importance of Europe. The HEAG mobilo bus operates on various routes throughout the city.
“Our Europe Direct team at the Darmstadt Regional Council and I personally are very happy to support this campaign, as it makes the European idea visible to everyone,” emphasizes Regional President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt.
The initiative also receives support from the district: Lutz Köhler, First Deputy District Administrator, says: “Our region lies in the heart of Europe. The European Weeks contribute to people understanding each other better and make a strong, united Europe possible.”
Darmstadt city councillor Paul Georg Wandrey particularly emphasizes the importance of the EU for everyday life: "The European Union enables borderless mobility and is a guarantor of personal exchange and cultural understanding. I am very pleased that a Europe bus is also operating in Darmstadt!"
Arne Rath, Managing Director of HEAG mobilo, adds: “40 years of the Schengen Agreement remind us how much we have achieved through European cooperation. As a mobility service provider with employees from many nations, we are happy to visibly carry this conviction throughout the city.”
Selfie campaign with prize draw
The campaign is accompanied by a statewide social media contest: Anyone who takes a selfie with one of the European buses and posts it on Instagram can win a Hesse gift package. Tagging the account @HesseninBerlinundEuropa . A total of 25 packages will be given away. Further information is available on the website of the European Affairs Department of the State of Hesse .
Background: 40 years of Schengen & 75 years of the Schuman Declaration
The European Weeks 2025 are marked by two historic anniversaries: 40 years of the Schengen Agreement and 75 years of the Schuman Declaration. The latter was published on May 9, 1950, and is considered the foundation of today's European Union.
