Events with readings and educational trips focusing on shared history and current challenges
To mark Europe Day on May 9th, the Groß-Gerau District Adult Education Center (KVHS) is offering several events focusing on the historical and current development of relations between Germany, France, and Poland. In addition to readings in Mörfelden-Walldorf and Gernsheim, an educational trip to Alsace is also planned for September.
Reading about the French occupation period
On Sunday, May 4th , Gerhard Bökel will read from his work on the occupation of southwestern France during the Second World War at 5 pm at the Walldorf Concentration Camp Memorial (Familie-Jürges-Weg 1, Mörfelden-Walldorf). The reading will address collaboration, the French Resistance, and the post-war period. Admission is free. The event is organized by the KVHS (Adult Education Center) in cooperation with the Margit Horváth Foundation.
Event on German heritage in western Poland
On Thursday, May 9th , at 7 p.m. , author Karolina Kuszyk a reading in Gernsheim . In her book "Poniemieckie – The German Cultural Heritage in Western Poland," she explores how the Polish population grapples with the German past in formerly German territories. Partners in this event include the Town Twinning Association, the Gernsheim City Library, Arbeit und Leben Hessen (Work and Life Hesse), the Bornhofen Bookstore, and the Caritas Network.
Educational leave to Alsace in September
A special highlight of the program is the educational leave trip to Alsace from September 13th to 17th, 2025. Participants will visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the Alsace-Moselle Memorial in Schirmeck. Discussions with trade unionists from the French CGT union are also planned. The educational leave trip is being organized in cooperation with the DGB (German Trade Union Confederation) district association of Groß-Gerau and Arbeit und Leben Hessen (Work and Life Hesse).
