Winners from Darmstadt and the surrounding district receive certificates in the Orangery – Mayor Benz praises their commitment to a united Europe
At the awards ceremony for the 72nd European Competition, held on Monday, June 23, a total of 92 students from Darmstadt and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district for their entries on the theme "Europe? Absolutely!" The winning works ranged from creative drawings to multimedia projects – all aimed at critically and constructively addressing issues surrounding security and cohesion in Europe .
The awards went to students of the Eleonorenschule , Georg-Büchner-Schule , Justus-Liebig-Schule , Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium and the Marienhöhe school center in Darmstadt, as well as the Albert-Einstein-Schule Groß-Bieberau , the Max-Planck-Gymnasium Groß-Umstadt , the Justin-Wagner-Schule Roßdorf and the Gesamtschule im Schuldorf Bergstraße Seeheim-Jugenheim .
Mayor Benz: Europe as lived solidarity
Darmstadt's Mayor Hanno Benz personally congratulated the award winners and emphasized the importance of their commitment:
"These remarkable awards prove that the fundamental idea of Europe as a place of cohesion and solidarity is embraced by the younger generation in our region. My special thanks also go to the teachers who integrated the competition into everyday school life and supported the students in its implementation."
This year's competition focused on current social and political issues. For grades 1 to 4, the theme was "Help in times of need ," for grades 5 to 7 it was "Europe - fantastically grown ," for grades 8 to 10 it was "Pop against populism," and for the upper grades it was "Everyone fed?"
About the competition
The European Competition is the oldest student competition in Germany. It was launched in 1953 as part of the European Youth Campaign and is now supported by, among others, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , the Federal Foreign Office , the Education and Cultural Affairs and the Federal President .
More than 74,000 students of all ages and school types participated nationwide in 2024, including over 5,200 in Hesse 224 children and young people submitted entries from the Darmstadt and southern Hesse
